MARGARET BOOZER, Sculptor

What might drive other artists to despair, fascinates Washington sculptor Margaret Boozer. The clay she shapes continues to change and crack, to morph into something both elegant and primal. As she once told a reporter—“The clay is doing a little performance piece.” Her work is included in the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

ERIC SCHAEFFER, Artistic Director

In the 19 years since co-founding Washington’s Signature Theatre, Eric Schaeffer has directed a seemingly impossible number of dramas and musicals in Washington, London, Los Angeles and New York. He’s received 11 Helen Hayes awards and acted in more than a dozen movies and television shows. Do you think he might have a story or two?

TODD GRAY, Chef

Foodies, would you like to dine with one of America’s great chefs? Todd Gray, who opened Washington’s Equinox restaurant with his wife Ellen in 1999, is at your service. He is known for his seasonal menu of homegrown produce and beef raised on local, organic farms. And this hot spot is where Michelle Obama chose to celebrate her most recent birthday. Bon appetite!

BRIANNE BLAND, Ballerina

Her reviews are nearly as breathtaking as her dancing—“technically stunning,” “unembellished and pure,” “steel strong, yet pliant as wire.” For the past 12 years, the Washington Ballet’s Brianne Bland has bewitched audiences in works by George Balanchine, Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Mark Morris. Last summer she performed with the Copenhagen International Ballet.

CHUCK BROWN, Musician

Got funk? Don’t worry, the Godfather of Go-Go music has enough to share. The founder in the 1970’s of DC’s homegrown Go-Go style, Brown’s Soul Searchers had a no.1 hit: “Bustin Loose” in 1979. Brown’s other great discovery was singer Eva Cassidy. He sang two duets on the late singer’s debut album. Don’t forget ask him about last year’s Japan tour.

MATT MENDELSOHN, Photographer

He’s photographed life inside the White House, the Gulf War and the invasion of Panama. Snapped portraits of Nicole Kidman, Chris Rock and more brides than he can count. Washingtonian described his portraits as “a breed apart.” And did we mention he writes humor pieces for the NY Times and Washington Post? You’ll be dining out on his stories for years to come.

NINA BURLEIGH, Author

Have you heard about the Bible relic forgery scheme in Israel (Unholy Business: A True Tale of Faith, Greed and Forgery in the Holy Land)? Or the unsolved murder of Mary Meyer, CIA wife and Kennedy mistress (A Very Private Woman)? Burleigh, author of four critically acclaimed non-fiction books can dish between dishes about those dark and sordid stories and more.

PHILIP KENNICOTT, Culture Critic

Washington Post culture and architecture critic. Pulitzer Prize finalist for editorial writing. Former senior editor of Musical America. Philosophy major at Yale. How could dinner conversation with Philip Kennicott be anything less than lively? Be sure to ask about his award-winning video Fueling Azerbaijan’s Future, and his stint on a sheep ranch in New Zealand.
