Fillmore East Opens Its Doors
|
| The third floor of Backus Middle School on South Dakota Avenue, N.E. is the new home of Fillmore East. Three visual arts, a drama, dance, string, and band/general music classrooms make up the comprehensive arts space. Participating schools are Clark, Mamie D. Lee, Raymond, Rudolph and West Elementary Schools and the Backus Middle School sixth graders. Replicating the Fillmore model, early childhood students (through second grade) are rotated through visual arts, music, dance and drama during the year. Older students choose classes (from band, strings, percussion, dance, drama and visual arts) each semester. The students have settled in and are working on performance and exhibit pieces. |

Fillmore Dance Teachers Study Abroad

| Karen Daniels and friend dance in Ghana |
Maggie Meenehan - Main Plaza Mexico City |
|
| Fillmore dance teacher and arts educator, Karen Daniels, traveled to Ghana, West Africa this past summer through an Innovative Teaching Award from the Murdock-Thompson Center For Teachers for her "Ghana Project." Ms. Daniels continued her research on Ghanaian arts (dance, music, theater, visual arts) and culture. She studied at the University of Ghana/Legon with master artists of the Ghana Dance Ensemble, and master dancers in the regions of Kumasi, and Denu. She also collected instruments, books, and artifacts to use in the classroom for the ongoing development and implementation of the"Ghana Project" to Fillmore students.
This summer Maggie Meenehan was a happy recipient of a FulbrightScholarship to Canada and Mexico for five weeks. After brushing up on her high school French and practicing her Spanish with her daughter, she traveled with sixteen teachers from across the US to four cities in each country. She toured archeological sights, visited museums, attended lectures and met with educators and dignitaries to expand her knowledge of our North American neighbors. Ms. Meenehan will present a curriculum project where the students will research and create their own travel brochures. Ms. Meenehan has a special interest in empowering students to reach for the stars and to avail themselves of travel opportunities. The students and teachers of the Six-School Complex will surely benefit from her travels.

Fillmore Arts Center is now serving over 2,000 DCPS students in its two locations. What a wonderful way to begin the 2007 2008 school year. We extend a warm welcome to our new schools: Clark, Raymond, Rudolph and West Elementary Schools, Backus Middle School and the new Oyster middle school program at Adams. We are also pleased to welcome several new faculty members. Detailed information regarding these developments can be found throughout this newsletter.
Our classrooms are buzzing with activity. Here is a glimpse into some of the classrooms: all second graders playing violin, some African dance students at Fillmore East up on stilts; Young Playwrights working with Key drama students; field trips to Fandango, the Jungle Book, the African Museum; architecture class studying Frank Lloyd Wright; performance by KanKouron African Dancers for Backus and Raymond students; Oyster at Adams students playing the guitar; musical theater classes staging numbers; paint, print, oil pastel and drawings on display at both sites and in the schools; string and band students becoming an ensemble.
We hope you had a chance to attend our Back-to-School Nights. Fillmore parents had an opportunity to meet teachers, learn about arts standards and projects and become "artists for a night" during the Back to School Night at Fillmore East on November 14 and Fillmore West on November 15. Families from the participating schools spent the evening viewing student work, hearing from Fillmore teachers about class progress and taking an African Dance, string, drama, or visual arts class. Many families expressed a wish that they could be a Fillmore student! There will be opportunities throughout the year to visit during open houses and festival evening, and you are welcome to schedule a classroom visit at any time by calling the office.
The arts help to increase creativity, critical thinking skills, self-expression and self-esteem. Fillmore’s mission is to sustain a unique arts education program that helps students become responsible adults capable of making positive contributions to a culturally and ethnically diverse society. We appreciate your support as we work together to enhance your child’s education.

Young Playwrights Theatre is working with Key
students on Thursday morning to develop an understanding of the craft of playwrighting. The group will be working with Fillmore East drama students in the spring semester in a similar project. Young Playwrights sends professional drama instructors into the classroom to help young students write short plays, some of which are then presented by professional actors. Two previous Fillmore students’ works were put on by the Young Playwrights on the Truth or Dare Tour last year and the year before. |

Fillmore Arts Camp Has a Successful Summer of Fun!
Fillmore Arts Camp, in it's 26th year of operation, returned to it " home " base this summer and completed a full six weeks of creative fun for campers and staff! Because we were back on site our campers were able to walk to nearby pools to cool off and enjoy the outdoors with fellow campers. We were able to play outdoor games and sports using Jelleff's fields. Fillmore Arts Camp offered two, three-week session and both sessions were equally well attended.

One summer highlight was the completion of the BEAUTIFUL OUTDOOR MURAL that our talented older campers designed and executed with the direction of our two artist/teachers Ria Lopez-Descoins and Jimena Trujillo. The mural is painted on the large wall of the Spiral Flight Yoga Studio on Wisc. Ave., facing the Starbucks parking lot. Bravo to our talented painters! take a look next time you drive up Wisconsin Ave. This is the fourth community mural by Fillmore Arts Camp. Others include the Glover Park Whole Foods ( on the parking lot wall), Georgetown Starbucks upper deck, and Stoddert Elementary School's upper playground.
Fillmore's After School''s arts enrichments classes began in early October, with classes in Beginning & Intermediate Violin, Piano, Guitar, Creative Writing & Illustration, Drawing & Painting, Mixed Media, Sculpture in Wire & Clay, Fairy Tale Theater,Musical Theater, Gymnastics and Pre-Ballet. Classes are offered to children aged 6-14, on Tues. and Thurs., at 3:45 and 4:45 pm. The 12 week Spring semester will begin in late January 2008. Brochures and registration forms for the spring semester will go out to schools after the December holiday break. Be on the lookout for them and join in the creative programs offered at Fillmore!
